Accounting for Skokie professional practices

A low commercial building on a suburban main street

Skokie sits directly north of our West Ridge office, and we work with businesses and professional practices across the village.

The village rate

Skokie is a home rule municipality, so the village levies its own sales tax on top of the state and county rates. A business moving a few blocks over the Chicago border, or selling into both, files against a different combined rate than before. Getting the registration and the rate right at the start costs far less than a correction later. Two shops five minutes apart charge different totals legitimately, which is why the registration address matters.

Practice accounting

The village holds a dense concentration of professional practices. Medical and dental offices, law firms, therapists and consultants. They share a specific set of accounting needs. Insurer money arrives on a delay making cash flow look nothing like the profit and loss statement. Owners are usually S corporation shareholders taking both a salary and distributions. Equipment purchases raise depreciation timing questions every year.

Payroll and locums

Practices carry a payroll question other small businesses skip. An associate, a hygienist and a front desk hire are all employees. A locum covering a fortnight often is not. The paperwork has to reflect the difference on day one rather than the following January.

Village business licensing sits alongside the state filings we already handle, so nothing depends on an owner remembering which authority wants what.

Questions owners ask

I run a practice as an S corporation. What should I pay myself?

Enough to stand as reasonable compensation for the work you do, with the rest available as distribution. The number depends on your specialty, your hours and what the practice earns. We document how we got there.

Do you run payroll for a practice with part-time staff?

Yes. Part-time and variable hours change the arithmetic and leave the obligations the same. Locums and short-term cover deserve a conversation before the first payment.

Do I have to come to your office?

No. Most practice clients work with us remotely and visit once a year at most. The drive from Skokie is about ten minutes for either arrangement.

The first conversation is free. We read three months of statements, quote a flat figure and hold it. We reply the same working day.
