The Devon Avenue corridor holds one of the densest independent retail strips in Chicago. Grocers, jewelers, clothing shops, restaurants, sweet shops and travel agents, most of them family owned and many of them handling serious cash. Our office sits a few blocks north on Campbell, and we work with this strip every week.
What cash retail does to the books
Cash-heavy retail creates bookkeeping problems a consultancy never meets. Daily deposits reconcile against register totals rather than invoices. Owner draws mix with business spending. Inventory bought from a supplier with informal paperwork still has to land somewhere defensible in the books.
Family businesses
Family businesses raise a second set of questions the software never asks. A relative working the counter is either on payroll or is not, and each answer has consequences. A shop and the flat above it under one owner are two different tax stories. A business passing to the next generation needs records surviving the handover, which is a bookkeeping problem long before a legal one.
The records a shop should keep
Daily register totals, deposit slips, supplier invoices including the informal ones, and a separate record of anything the owner takes out. Four habits, and they remove most of what makes a retail year end painful.
Who this covers
- Grocers and food retail. Daily cash, thin margins, and supplier paperwork varying by delivery.
- Jewelers and high-value inventory. Inventory valuation and insurance records have to agree with the books.
- Restaurants and sweet shops. Food tax, tipped pay, and a register total matching the deposit.
- Salons and barbers. Booth renters and employees are taxed differently and work side by side.
- Clothing and textile shops. Seasonal buying distorts the profit and loss statement unless stock is tracked.
Questions owners ask
Do you work with cash businesses?
Constantly. A cash business runs on record-keeping discipline. Register totals reconciled to deposits, a clear line between the till and the owner, and a paper trail for stock bought without a clean invoice. We set the system up and keep it going.
Do I need an appointment to drop off paperwork?
No. Come by during office hours. If the person on your file is busy, leave the folder and we will call you the same day. We are on Campbell, north of the Devon shops, with street parking directly outside.
Do you help with the business licence for a shop here?
We handle the tax registrations and tell you which licence the activity needs. Getting the licence right before opening avoids a letter from the city later.
