Chicago city taxes nobody warns you about

The Chicago skyline

Chicago adds a layer of tax stopping at the city line. Beyond federal and Illinois filings sit city obligations new owners rarely hear about. The lease transaction tax on rented equipment and software. The amusement tax on ticketed events and streaming. The bottled water tax on retail sales. The restaurant tax on prepared food. None appear on a federal return and all of them generate notices when missed.

The county layer

Cook County adds another layer, and the combined sales tax rate inside the city ranks among the highest in the country. Any business selling goods needs the rate and the filing frequency right from month one, because a correction reaches back over every sale since.

The paperwork layer

The city wants its own paperwork too. Most businesses operating here need a city business licence alongside the state registration, and several trades need a specific licence rather than the general kind. Registering with Springfield and assuming the job is done is the most common gap we find on a new client.

Who runs into this

  • Retail and wholesale. Sales tax filing frequency follows your volume and changes as you grow.
  • Restaurants and bars. Prepared food carries a city tax of its own, filed apart from sales tax.
  • Firms renting equipment or software. The lease transaction tax reaches subscriptions, which surprises most owners.
  • Venues and ticketed events. A city tax applies to admissions, assessed whether or not you filed.
  • Trades working across city and suburb. Where the work happens decides which rules and rates apply.

Questions owners ask

Which city taxes catch new business owners out most often?

The lease transaction tax on rented equipment and software subscriptions, and the tax on prepared food for anyone serving it. Both are city obligations never appearing on a federal return, so a business filing correctly with the IRS and the state still accrues a city liability it knows nothing about.

Do I register with the city as well as the state?

Usually yes. A state registration covers state taxes, and the city licence is separate. Certain activities need a specific licence rather than the general one. Settle the question before you open.

Do you only work with businesses on the North Side?

No. Our office is at 6346 N Campbell Ave on the North Side and many clients are nearby, and we work across the city and the suburbs. Statements arrive the same way from Pilsen as from a block away.
